Professor Valery S. Katkalo, Vice-Rector, St. Petersburg University & Dean, Graduate School of Management has been elected Chairman of the EPAS Accreditation Board

At the EFMD Board Meeting (European Foundation for Management Development, www.efmd.org) that took place on 2 February 2012 professor Valery S. Katkalo, Vice-Rector, St. Petersburg University & Dean, Graduate School of Management has been elected Chairman of the EPAS Accreditation Board (European Program Accreditation System, http://efmd.org/accreditation-main/epas).

EPAS is one of the most prestigious international programme accreditation systems in the field of management. It was introduced by EFMD in 2005 and currently 61 programmes from 47 business schools, including 5 from Russia, hold EPAS accreditation title.

At the moment GSOM SPbU is the only Russian business school to hold unconditional EPAS accreditation (Bachelor of Management Programme) for a maximum period of 5 years, and to pass eligibility stage of the institutional accreditation system operated by EFMD – EQUIS. GSOM SPbU holds AMBA accreditation for MBA programmes and is the only representative from Russia in such global alliances of leading business schools and companies as CEMS, PIM, GBSN and EABiS.

The Museum building will be closed for the entire evening for normal admission and only those attending English Evenings will be welcomed inside. We have several exciting events planned for our first night, including:

«Window on The Netherlands», the annual program of the Netherlands Consulate-General takes place in September-October 2011. Since 1996, when we celebrated the 300th anniversary of the Great Embassy of Peter I to the Netherlands, the Consulate-General actively strives to present current developments in the Netherlands to the Russian public. Attention is paid to a broad variety of topics like the economy, culture, arts, education, science, society, design.  It contributes to the strengthening and deepening of our long-term friendly cooperation and enhances mutual understanding. 
Within the framework of the program planned for two autumn months a number of events will take place such as a modern Dutch architecture exhibition, an exhibition of recent trends in the field of design, concerts within the framework of cooperation with the Amsterdam Grachtenfestival as well as many other activities. Friday, October 07, 2011Salans assists RÜTGERS Group in establishing a joint venture with SEVERSTAL

Salans has represented RÜTGERS Group, Europe’s leading manufacturer of chemical raw materials made from coal tar and owned by private equity investment firm Triton, in signing a joint venture with Severstal, one of the world’s leading vertically integrated steel and mining companies. An agreement to this effect was signed in Moscow by Severstal Russian Steel Division general director Alexander Grubman, RÜTGERS Group President and CEO Mr. Henri Steinmetz and RÜTGERS Group CFO Dr. Max Padberg.
RÜTGERS holds 51 % of the charter capital. Total investments make up USD 26.6 million through borrowed funds over 5 years. The joint venture "RÜTGERS Severtar" will use the facilities of the tar pitch processing shop of the coke and by-product process at Severstal's factory in Cherepovets to produce vacuum pitch, technical oils and naphthalene by deep conversion of coal-tar. The joint venture is scheduled to become fully operational by the 1st quarter of 2013.  Read more »

  • Provided legal support in the sale, acquisition and leasing/renting of land and real estate, etc.

The Salans Global Real Estate Group has advised Heitman European Property Partners IV on its first acquisition in Russia, a Class A office building in Metropolis Mixed-Use Centre, from the developer, Capital Partners.

Metropolis is a 311,000 sq. m. complex comprising three office buildings and a shopping center. It is located in the office corridor connecting Moscow city center and Sheremtyevo Airport. Completed in 2008, it is now fully leased to multinational corporate tenants.

According to the annual ranking of Factors of the Year International Factoring Association of Factors Chain International (FCI) National Factoring Company  is the best Import Factor in Russia's service quality. Thus, the average time for consideration of requests from the NFC foreign partners was 11.9 days, while the percentage of approved limits reached 41.7% of total applications, despite the fact that the average for the FCI is 10.2 days and 46.5% accordingly. 

NFC offers its foreign partners the following services - checks financial responsibility of Russian buyers and sets limits on them, collects receivables, and covers the risk of non-payment of imported goods. Thus import factoring allows foreign factoring companies serve their customers export to Russia without the risk of losses, which in turn gives the Russian importers an opportunity to work with their foreign suppliers on terms of payment delay without obligation to provide them with bank guarantees or letters of credit.

Salans wins landmark arbitration recognition in Kemerovo Russia

On 20 July 2011, Salans St. Petersburg team led by partner Mikhail Ivanov won a landmark decision for Salans client Ciments Français recognising an ICC arbitral award that had been set aside in Istanbul, Turkey, the seat of the arbitration.

This is the first time that a Russian court has recognised a foreign arbitral award set aside at the place of arbitration. Until this decision, only the courts of a very limited number of countries, notably France and The Netherlands, have enforced arbitration awards set aside in the place of arbitration. To do so, the Russian court examined the interrelationship between Article IX of European Convention on International Commercial Arbitration of 1961 (“1961 European Convention”) and Article V of New York Convention on the Recognition and Enforcement of Foreign Arbitral Awards of 1958 (“1958 New York Convention”). The Salans team included Of Counsel Elena Barikhnovskaya and paralegal Anna Sviridova.

The award in question, a partial award, had been issued by an ICC arbitral tribunal seated in Istanbul, Turkey. The arbitration is still pending. The successful claimant, Ciments Français, sought to have the award recognised in the Russian Federation, before the commercial court for the Kemerovo region. The respondent, Sibirskiy Cement Holding Company, objected to such recognition.

CIA® certification founded by the Institute of Internal Auditors (IIA, USA) is one of the globally recognized certifications for specialists of internal audit and internal control.
On 1 June 2011, the Academy started enrollment for the CIA® preparatory program in its six locations: Almaty, Kiev, Moscow, Novosibirsk, St. Petersburg and Yekaterinburg.

«Leaders of corporate philanthropy — 2011» is the joint project of the daily business newspaper
"Vedomosti", the international network of audit and consulting firms PWC International Limited (PwCIL) and nonprofit partnership of grantmaking organizations «Donors Forum».
The project goal is to identify best corporate philanthropic programs and to disseminate information about them among interested parties - business, authorities, mass-media, and broader civil society in order to raise awareness in corporate philanthropy in Russia.
The project consists of ranking in sphere of creation and management of corporate philanthropy and competition of programs under few nominations.
During the years of realization the project attracted over 80 companies, most of them – more than once. Results were identified by a number of well-known experts in the field, presented in a number of professional conferences and platforms and due to special efforts – publications and presentations- were noticed by interested persons from the government, academia, and mass-media.
By participating in the project, the companies have possibility:

• to raise efficiency of the work in social sphere;
• to tell about their successes to a bigger number of interested parties;
• to receive consultation about their own programs and to structure their activity in a more effective way;
• to influence successful relations between society, philanthropic institutions, and business.

The methodology was specially designed and  developed by PwC and Donors Forum experts. The methodology is based on a range of qualitative and qualitative criteria to measure company’s strategy and performance in philanthropic activities.

The event is devoted to the Children’s Day and it will be held on the initiative of Andrei for the fourth time. During in the meeting on 18 May 2011, the EPAS Accreditation Board voted to grant EPAS accreditation to the St. Petersburg University Graduate School of Management for its Bachelor of Management programme for a period of five years.

The Board notes the serious manner in which GSOM SPbU has responded to the previously stated areas for improvement and that under the terms of 5 years accreditation, three strategic development objectives must be agreed between the School and the EPAS Office for this programme.

For the first time Russian Corporate Counsel Association (RCCA) and Pepeliaev Group will bring together the representatives of the Constitutional Court of and corporate lawyers to discuss the practical needs of contemporary legislation. The future enforcement of the general principles of the Code and, therefore, development of arbitration practice, will depend, to a considerable extent, on the positions of the Constitutional Court.
